Historic 2024 Legislative Victories for Holocaust and Genocide Education

We are excited to share that Governor Newsom has now signed several priority bills into law. These new laws advance Holocaust and genocide education and combat antisemitism—enhancing the educational and social environment for youth throughout California.

Governor Newsom has signed the following bills that the California Teachers Collaborative championed alongside our partners:

California Teachers Collaborative member with Holocaust Survivor

SB 1277 (Sen. Henry Stern): Makes the JFCS-led California Teachers Collaborative for Holocaust and Genocide Education an official state program to expand expert-led curriculum development and provide training for thousands of middle and high school teachers to teach about antisemitism, the Holocaust and other genocides effectively.

SB 1287 (Sen. Steve Glazer): Provides a critical tool to protect Jewish students from violence, intimidation, and harassment on California college campuses by requiring campuses to develop a code of conduct to respond to such incidents.

AB 2925 (Asm. Laura Friedman and Asm. Josh Lowenthal): Requires the top 5 most targeted minority groups—which consistently includes Jewish people—to be included in higher education anti-discrimination and DEI trainings.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our action alerts, joined us in Sacramento, and added their voice to advocate strongly on behalf of these measures! This year’s legislative victories are historic and will have a lasting impact by countering antisemitism, combating hate, and creating a safer school environment for California’s youth.
