Our Mission
The California Teachers Collaborative for Holocaust and Genocide Education is a groundbreaking statewide network of organizations, genocide survivors, and educators with a common goal: to eliminate antisemitism and hate by ensuring that every middle and high school student in California receives impactful Holocaust and genocide education.
The Power of Holocaust and Genocide Education
As antisemitism and hate crimes rise globally, educating the next generation about the consequences is more crucial than ever. Research consistently shows that students who receive Holocaust and genocide education become more empathetic, inclusive, and likely to stand up against injustice.
Our Work
California led the nation as the first state to mandate Holocaust and genocide education in 1985. Now, through the Collaborative, we’re the first state to systematize teacher training in this vital area. We provide:
- Common Core-aligned curricula for grades 6–12, so that school districts statewide can meet this mandate.
- Workshops, conferences, and digital resources to empower educators with the tools they need to teach these complex subjects effectively.
- A powerful platform for change that unites California’s leading Holocaust and genocide education organizations.
Founding and Support
Established in 2021 by the JFCS Holocaust Center in San Francisco, the Collaborative is supported by the California Department of Education, Marin County Office of Education, the State of California, and the Diane & Guilford Glazer Foundation.
We work in close collaboration with the Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education, which is charged with assessing the state of Holocaust and genocide education in California and ensuring its continued impact.
