Ottoman Genocide of Assyrians During WWI
During World War I, Assyrian communities across the Ottoman Empire and northwestern Persia endured massacres, deportations, and forced displacement that devastated families and centuries-old ways of life. Known to Assyrians as the Seyfo, or “the sword,” this genocide remains one of the least taught chapters of twentieth-century history.
Led by Dr. Sabro Bengaro and Dr. Zeena Tawfik Yonkers, this workshop provides middle and high school educators with the historical context to teach the Seyfo with confidence and care. Explore the causes and course of the genocide, its connections to the concurrent Armenian and Greek genocides, and the resilience of Assyrian communities who preserved their language, faith, and culture in the aftermath. Gain a deeper understanding of how genocide unfolds, why some histories go unrecognized, and why remembrance matters for students today.
