Bitter Memories of Childhood: Holodomor Survivors’ Stories
From friend of the Collaborative Southern California Holodomor Genocide Committee: To help students understand the terror gripping Ukraine today, educators must be equipped to explain its historical precedent: the Holodomor—Stalin’s genocide against Ukrainians in the 1930s. In this workshop, teachers will work with survivor testimonies, propaganda posters, official Soviet documents, and historical maps to explore the causes, mechanisms, and consequences of state-imposed violence. Participants will also discuss perpetration, denial, resistance, and moral choice.
Teachers will leave with adaptable, classroom-ready materials; thoughtfully designed discussion prompts aligned with genocide prevention and commemoration goals; and practical strategies for integrating the Holodomor into genocide and human rights curricula.
