This five-lesson unit introduces students to Uyghur culture and identity before examining the ongoing Uyghur genocide. Students explore cultural suppression, mass detention, forced labor, impacts on women and children, poetry as a form of expression, and testimony as a primary source. Through discussion, writing, analysis, and reflection, students develop historical understanding, empathy, media literacy, and a sense of individual and collective responsibility in responding to injustice and genocide.
