Students learn how researchers and policymakers assess the risk of genocide using the PREVENT Model, a framework that identifies seven categories of risk factors and triggers. Through discussion, case studies, and analysis of contemporary countries, students evaluate warning signs of mass atrocities and apply genocide prediction tools to real-world situations. The lesson emphasizes prevention, critical thinking, and evidence-based analysis while introducing students to the work of the USHMM Early Warning Project.
