Students investigate the genocide perpetrated by ISIS against Assyrians in Iraq and Syria, with a particular focus on cultural destruction. Through analysis of Raphael Lemkin’s writings, comparisons between draft and final versions of the UN Genocide Convention, primary source documents, videos, and reflections, students explore how genocide is defined, the role of cultural destruction in genocidal processes, and the lasting effects of violence, displacement, and heritage loss on communities.
