Students examine the UN Genocide Convention through a case study of the Darfur Genocide. They analyze Articles I and II of the Convention, evaluate survivor testimony and U.S. government sources, investigate Colin Powell’s 2004 genocide determination, and consider the responsibilities of governments and global citizens in preventing and responding to genocide. The lesson emphasizes primary source analysis, evidence-based argumentation, international law, and human rights.
